Harpo Speaks!
Harpo Marx
I first read this book when I was about eleven years old. I've read it
many times since. It is my touchstone. My inspiration. My
bible. I want to live my life the way that he did. With humor and
grace. |
 |
Interview with the
Vampire Anne Rice
Picked this book up because of Sting's song "Moon Over Bourbon Street".
Many might discount her for being too commercial these days, but I adore the
imagery in this book. The way she describes the world through a
vampire's eyes really moved me. |
|
Still Life with
Woodpecker Tom Robbins
I need to read this one again. Tom Robbins is out there, man. This
book kicks ass. You should read it again, too. |
 |
Frankenstein
Mary Shelley
First read this as a senior in high school. What an amazing story.
If you've never read it, do yourself a favor and pick up a copy today. |
|
The Sneetches
Dr. Seuss
I love all of Dr. Seuss. I never tire of introducing kids to his books.
This one has always been my favorite and perhaps one day may join my list of
tattoos. |
 |
Harry Potter & the
Prisoner from Azkaban J.K. Rowling
Man, these books are amazing! So far this one is the best in my eyes. |
 |
The Hotel New
Hampshire John Irving
The man I most often credit as my favorite author. The movie was disappointing even though
it remained pretty true to the book. Sorrow
floats. Keep passing the open windows. Sooo many things I love
about this one. |
|
High Fidelity
Nick Hornby
This book really hit home with me on so many levels. I loved the movie,
but not so much as the book. Oddly enough with his book "About a Boy", I
liked the movie better. Go figure. |
 |
The House at Pooh
Corner
A.A. Milne
I've said it before and I'll say it again. Tigger is my hero... forever
and ever, amen. |
|
A Wrinkle in Time
Madeline LEngle
Read this series of kids books in college and found them not only entertaining
but profound. Just
recently went back to read this again and I'm afraid it has fallen into the shadows
of the more cinematic Mr. Potter. |
 |
The World According
to Garp John Irving
Classic. Love the movie. Love the book. |
|
Where the Wild Things
Are Maurice Sendak
I had so much fun reading this to kids when I was teaching. Nothing
better than a book about monsters. When I was little a Sendak favorite
was "Chicken Soup with Rice". |
 |
Jitterbug Perfume
Tom Robbins
More wacky shit. Read this guy, I'm telling you! |
|
Lonesome Dove
Larry McMurtry
This is one is about a gazillion pages long and it is a western. Two strikes against it.
But, holy crap, is it riveting. I couldn't put it down! |
 |
On the Road
Jack Kerouac
One of those life-changing books. You'll never quite see the world the
same way again. |
|
Andy Kaufman
Revealed! Bob Zmuda
Riveting. Almost too ridiculous to believe at times... but then, that's
Andy, isn't it? |
 |
Bartholomew & the
Oobleck
Dr. Seuss
I swear there's a part of this book that's been edited out since I was a kid.
Didn't he get stuck in the bathtub or was it my imagination? I remember
being scared to take a bath after reading it. |
|
The Tao of Pooh
Benjamin Hoff
More hippie shit. |
|
Operating
Instructions: A Journal of my Sons First Year Anne Lamott
All women should read this one, whether they are interested in having kids or
not. |
|
Even Cowgirls Get the
Blues Tom Robbins
A chick with six-inch thumbs? How can it not be entertaining? |
 |
Travels With Charley
John Steinbeck
Someday I'll just hop in the car and travel the country for a
few months like he did. As is often the case with Steinbeck, there is much food for
thought here that is still relevant in today's world. |
|
Groucho Letters:
Letters to and from Groucho Marx
Proof positive that this man was
incredibly clever. |
|
Darkness Visible: A
Memoir of Madness William Styron
A great primer for those who want to understand what it's like to be in the
throes of serious depression. |
|
OUT OF PRINT |
Behind the
Candelabra: My Life with Liberace Scott Thorson
What "Showgirls" is to movies, this is to books. The best $2.98 I ever
spent in my life. |
 |
Stupid White Men
Michael Moore
I haven't even read this one yet, but you know what? I don't have to. I know
I'll love it. |
